When Should Your Child First Visit the Orthodontist?
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, children should have their first orthodontic screening around the age of 7. This early visit helps Dr. Andrew Cedarbaum evaluate whether orthodontic treatment will be necessary and identify the ideal start time. Many local dentists are trained to spot orthodontic issues early and may refer you to our office even before your child turns 7.
Why Is Early Evaluation Important?
Evaluating children at a young age allows for the early detection of orthodontic issues. Early diagnosis can help guide teeth eruption into better positions, maintain the space needed for permanent teeth, and lower the risk of injury to protruding front teeth.
If early treatment is recommended, Dr. Cedarbaum can help guide the growth of the jaw and manage the alignment of permanent teeth. Early intervention can also help:
- Regulate the width of the dental arches.
- Create room for permanent teeth.
- Prevent the need for tooth extractions.
- Lower the risk of impacted teeth.
- Correct habits like thumb-sucking.
- Address speech and swallowing issues.
By starting treatment early, later phases of care can be simplified, especially once all permanent teeth have erupted.
Does Every Child Benefit from Early Treatment?
Not all children require early orthodontic treatment. Certain types of orthodontic problems are better addressed during adolescence once all the permanent teeth have come in. Skeletal issues, in particular, might be more efficiently treated when a child is older and growth is more advanced. Dr. Cedarbaum develops personalized treatment plans based on the individual needs of each child. If your child isn’t ready for treatment, they will be enrolled in our Orthodontic Observation Program.
What Is the Orthodontic Observation Program?
Our Orthodontic Observation Program is designed for children who are not yet ready for active treatment. This program allows us to monitor how their permanent teeth are coming in and identify potential issues early.
In some cases, removing baby teeth early can improve the eruption pattern of permanent teeth, reducing the time needed for braces later on. We’ll communicate any recommendations to your general dentist. Patients are typically seen every 4-6 months as part of this program, and there is no fee for enrollment. This ensures we can begin treatment at the most effective time for the best outcome.
What Are the Additional Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment?
Besides achieving a straighter smile, braces provide several long-term benefits:
- Improved bite function and overall dental health.
- Easier teeth cleaning, reducing the risk of decay.
- Prevention of uneven tooth wear.
- Increased longevity of natural teeth.
Could a Palatal Expander Benefit My Child’s Early Treatment?
A palatal expander is a common orthodontic device used for children aged 6 to 11 to treat narrow palates and create space for proper tooth alignment. This device gradually widens the upper jaw, supporting better jaw development and ensuring there is enough room for permanent teeth to emerge.
Expanders are fixed appliances that effectively correct jaw discrepancies and enhance oral function. By beginning treatment early with a palatal expander, children can achieve improved bite alignment, reduced crowding, and a smoother transition to future orthodontic treatments.
Can Early Treatment Eliminate the Need for Braces Later?
Early treatment can address significant issues and prevent future complications. However, because not all permanent teeth have erupted during early treatment, final alignment might not be fully achieved. Most children will need a shorter, comprehensive phase of treatment (Phase II with full braces) during their teen years to complete the process. In some cases, no further treatment is necessary.
Do We Still Need to See Our Family Dentist During Orthodontic Treatment?
Yes! It’s essential to continue seeing your family dentist for routine check-ups and cleanings every six months. Orthodontic appliances can make it more challenging to keep teeth clean, so regular dental visits help ensure your child’s teeth remain in top shape throughout treatment.
